Reading Room

Dear Steele: Thanks to you I have rediscovered books. We should never let reading go out of style. I'm going to share all the fascinating things I'm discovering in the pages of books, and in the minds of wordsmiths.

How I let my ego get the best of me

E-mail Print PDF

The other day I got upset about something. Reflecting on it I realize how I became a “participant in human drama” by letting my ego get the best of me. I am a member of a dance group for Junkanoo. When I joined the group I learned they had some drama in recent history, but after a shakeup everyone was trying to move forward positively. Since everyone seemed recommitted I could care less about their ancient drama; I just came to collect a piece of treasure for my treasure hunt: freedom in the goatskin drum, freedom in the dance.

Unfortunately I let myself get drawn into the drama and had a period of unconsciousness, which took the form of me cussing someone off.

Stop doing. Start being.

E-mail Print PDF

I loved Iyanla Vanzant’s meditation for October 14, in her daily word book Acts of Faith. The affirmation for the day was: “I am”. The inspirational quote was: “Stop doing. Start being.” The main difference is that doing is intellectual and being is spiritual. When we get stuck in the doing of things we get trapped in our minds, thinking about what we can and cannot do, or should and should not do; we get trapped in our minds, thinking about what others will think, say or do about our doing. That is a recipe for disharmony.

Intro to the Comfort Food Series

E-mail Print PDF

The Comfort Food Series is about the world’s wordsmiths. These artists tap into certain emotional currents that are keys to unlocking the formula I'm looking for. It's my new mission, figuring out a formula to rid myself of certain emotional dis-eases.

These diseases sap the life out of the human spirit. They breed unhappiness and they make life far too more difficult than it really has to be. So I am putting stress on notice, disappointment on notice, guilt on notice, fear on notice, failure on notice and vanity on notice.

Let's stop pretending like someone knows

My webcam is old school so the video is grainy, but I'm broke so we'll have to work with it. Anyone care to invest in a video camera I am accepting donations. This is completly amateur stuff, but enjoy nonetheless.

About Us

Memoir of a Creative Extremist is an ongoing conversation with God. It is my prayer for the day. It was intended to be a news blog. In a way it still is. Here you will read about the things on my mind and in my soul. The category Memoir is the story of my life as it unfolds inside my head and outside in the tangible world. Travelogue is a collection of stories about my adventures around the world. Reading Room is a taste of the mind candy I ingest from the world's wordsmiths. The Archives contain the category Prayer Book, which is a collection of thoughts and questions I have of myself, of God, and the world, and the category Steele Chronicles, which are stories about the late great R. Kirk Steele. Learn about the inspiration for the name in extracts from Martin Luther King Jr's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail".
