Noelle Nicolls

Steele Chronicles

R. Kirk Steele is my best friend, boyfriend and future husband. He died of cancer on April 17, 2009.

Every time I hear someone speak about Steele it’s like I'm learning something new about him. It’s amazing how each person observes something different about him, or has another piece of the puzzle to fill in about his life experience. I’d like to piece the puzzle together, so we all can tell the story of our Man of Steele, not just from our own perspective, but from the collection of experiences.

So if you have a story to share, or a thought to offer, please share it in the comments. You don’t have to romanticize it; even a mundane encounter is a gift, so share whatever your spirit calls you to share. Share as many stories as often as you wish. Write a book for all I care. I figure even in his death, together, we can get to know him a little better.

Memories: they are all I have

E-mail Print PDF

I found out that Steele and I were both from St. Mary, born in January and preferred to listen rather than speak a lot. He had a disarming smile, I usually have a scowl.

My first memory came to life in August 2004 as a new and naïve Rexan at the University of the West Indies. A tall, chocolatey handsome guy with a perfect smile who just stood out from the other seniors who were hell bent on achieving human sacrifices during what university officials call the orientation exercise, which they renamed ‘grubbing’. As much as you describe the others as witches, he could always be counted on to smile at you, say hello, how are you and if needs be offer words of encouragement. The only thing you could do was admire and respect him.

I saw more to him when I started working on the Campus paper with Noelle, if we worked til morning proofreading so everything would be ready for the printers, at some point in that time he would have been there to sort out some computer problems, carry us food and just ensure that everyone especially Noelle was ok, since I am sure he knew that Noelle is an ‘energizer’ and couldn’t really be content with only doing 1 thing at a time.

R. Kirk Steele Memorial Scholarship

E-mail Print PDF

Not long after the passing of our dear friend, R. Kirk Steele, the idea of a scholarship in his honour was bandied about. So as not to allow the concept to die after the moment had faded, a few individuals decided to start the process that would hopefully lead to establishing a scholarship at St. George's College in September, 2009. The group contacted the school's Principal, and are well on the way to having an R. Kirk Steele Memorial Scholarship in place for the new school year.

Some aspects of the scholarship up for consideration were: Criteria, Applicable Student/Form, Value of Scholarship and Funding.

Early discussions involved Noelle Nicolls, Kishman Spence, Lyndon Latore, David Wright and (Steele's uncle) Claude Espeut. Below are the initial decisions made on the foregoing areas.

Steele's life in prayer

E-mail Print PDF

Dear God: As I stare into the here and now I wonder what awaits me in the now and then. The road I walked on last brought me here. I wasn’t alone, but I often felt alone, navigating through all the immensities in life with a sense of longing to manifest your greatness.

I talk to myself without using words, finding inside of me wisdom and a propensity to express love, both of which I heavily guard lest I bear the burden of an embarrassment of bliss.

Memories seep through my veins*

E-mail Print PDF

Dear Steele: This place is flooded with memories of you. Everywhere I turn memories float to the top and settle on the surface. Yesterday the police stopped Jahlani in a routine spot check. I remembered how your diplomacy skills always came into effect when we were pulled over by the police. You taught me a few tricks about slipping and sliding certain gifts in desperate times, but you always told me I wasn’t allowed to practice those tricks myself. And now you’ve finally escaped having to pay off those speeding tickets for good.

I remember this police officer stopped you over the Christmas for speeding. It happened to be at a time when we were selling tickets for Sting and Jazz and Blues. You told the police officer you had Jazz tickets, instead of Sting tickets (for which you instructed me to purchase from one of the outlets). I was rowing you about offering the more expensive ticket, and the fact that either ticket would have been sufficient. All you were talking about was what you gleaned from the officer that he has more of a Jazz and Blues kind of guy than a Sting kind of guy; how typically altruistic of you.

About Us

Memoir of a Creative Extremist is an ongoing conversation with God. It is my prayer for the day. It was intended to be a news blog. In a way it still is. Here you will read about the things on my mind and in my soul. The category Memoir is the story of my life as it unfolds inside my head and outside in the tangible world. Travelogue is a collection of stories about my adventures around the world. Reading Room is a taste of the mind candy I ingest from the world's wordsmiths. The Archives contain the category Prayer Book, which is a collection of thoughts and questions I have of myself, of God, and the world, and the category Steele Chronicles, which are stories about the late great R. Kirk Steele. Learn about the inspiration for the name in extracts from Martin Luther King Jr's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail".
