I have an obese friend who has a lot to teach me about food. He has a bowel movement after every meal he eats. Now I do not gather his average meal is nutritious, but he is doing something right. With a healthy digestive system you poop 30-45 minutes after every meal. For months now I have been on a vegetarian diet, trying to treat my body better by feeding it healthier. I could not figure out why my increase in lean, green veggies, high fiber foods and other healthy combinations was not having a proportional impact on my digestion. I think I might have discovered the answer: Iceberg lettuce.
I attended a one-day women’s conference yesterday called, “Re-awakening the Inner Goddess” and learned interesting things about food. Iceberg lettuce has virtually no nutritional value, and is not fit for human consumption. It actually has anti-digestion enzymes. I eat a garden salad almost every day that is filled with iceberg lettuce. Every time I eat that salad I am blocking up the flow of three previous meals, as they try to leave my body.
The problem is my potluck party, Stir it Up Sundays, is today. Trying to be proactive I made the salad yesterday, before my enlightenment at the conference. So I am going to be serving my guests a tasty digestive enzyme inhibitor salad. Now that I can no longer claim ignorance, I feel kind of guilty. So starting Monday, iceberg lettuce is getting the axe.
