Slave Steps

Noelle Khalila NicollsPrayer Book

Slave Steps are located on the west end of New Providence Island. The stone stairs were hand cut by displaced African ancestors brought to the islands as slaves, and may be older than the first plantation on the Island of 1785. The carved shape of the African continent in the rocks represents their memory of home. The healing circle of African women, called ‘Genesis’ is a monument created by Bahamian Artist Antonius Roberts, carved from the casuarinas trees that populate the area.
